The Tide is Turning...

While Toby and I were on our birthday trip to Maine, Ross took off work and kept Reid. I wasn't really concerned about them - I knew they'd do fine - but you just never know how the kid will react. It took him a few months to get past the time last year when Ross and I went on a trip and he was with my mom for 4 days. Once I cleared up the fact that I was definitely coming back, though, he was fine.

I had the camera with me so there are no photos from their excursions together. From what I understand, there was some bowling, Monkey Joe's, pizza, (with an unfortunate cell phone incident at the) pool... lots of activities. Reid had big plans for what they would do while Mommy was gone and Ross fulfilled a lot of it. :)

Over the past few months, Reid has really taken a shine to Daddy and all that one-on-one time together just sealed the deal. Nowadays, if he "needs" something, he comes to me. If he "wants" something, he goes to Daddy. Food, drink, potty: Mommy. Play trains, puzzles, and whatever Mommy would say no to: Daddy.

This is working out well for me thus far. Now when Reid wakes up in the morning and bursts into our room, he doesn't come to me. He goes to Daddy. (Yeah!) Saturday I was able to sleep until 8:20 (got to be some sort of record) because Reid came in, went straight to Ross, and begged to put on some clothes and go downstairs to play. Ross won't say no so I was left with relative quiet. Ahhhh.

The tide is turning. I might decide later that I don't love it so much but, right now, I am not complaining.

Birthday Trip to Maine

My best friend and I have birthdays that are only a week or so apart and, as we have gotten older (and more "adult"), we have upgraded our birthday celebrations.

When we both lived in the same city, we loved celebrating and even once took each other on an all-day shopping trip. He bought what I wanted and I bought what he wanted. Come to think of it, that was pretty fun. :)

Five years ago, we drew a city out of a hat (okay, an ashtray at a restaurant) and decided to take a birthday trip to whatever city we drew. That year it was Providence, Rhode Island, which also included a day trip to Newport and a spur of the moment trip to Boston.

This year, we planned a trip to Ogunquit, Maine. What an beautiful little town. If I remember correctly from something I read during our trip, Ogunquit means "beautiful place by the sea." The trip was a quick one - Friday morning to Sunday afternoon - but it was a much needed one for both of us. (Ross and Reid stayed home while I was gone, but more on that later.)

There is so much I could say about the trip. It was relaxing and gorgeous and fun. The town was quaint, the seafood was good, and the locals are really awesome. And I got to have some one-on-one time with my friend of 14 years that I don't get to see nearly enough of. Happy (early) birthday, friend!

I totally want to go back. Here are select few of the photos from the trip. (There are many, many more...)

Here we are at dinner on the first night there. What a great night!

My absolute favorite pic from the trip, taken from our lighthouse boat cruise.

Nubble Light, the lighthouse we took the boat out to see. You can drive up fairly close to it, but the boat view is way better. :)

Also taken from the boat cruise... just the epitome of the trip. A sailboat on the water. So pretty!

Strawberry Picking

We ventured out with the Robinsons and the Hennums for a morning of strawberry picking last week. We were out in the country and it was nice and hot. The boys were excited to get started! I had the bright idea to pick two baskets full of berries - and I think each basket is equal to one gallon. Two gallons is a LOT of strawberries!

Once we got home I had to come up with some ways to use or preserve those berries before they went bad. I ended up making a batch of freezer jam (which is a-w-e-s-o-m-e), freezing a gallon of them whole, and mashing up the rest then freezing that for later, too. I'm thinking I'll make some more jam and maybe some strawberry shortcake later when berries are not in season. I also got some good strawberry recipes from my Facebook friends. Hooray for strawberries!

Ready to go! Reid, Joshua, Bryce, and James.

Check out the strawberry juice dripping from his chin...

Bryce in his cool shades.

Looking for the perfect berry.

Reid (okay, and I) got to eat the ones that came off without the hull. They were so warm from sitting in the sunshine - so good!

Joshua and Jeannie.

Joshua showing off the goods.

Reid lost interest in the actual picking of the berries pretty quickly, but he stayed close to get those he was allowed to eat.

Juicy, red hands. :)

Mom's Birthday Luau

My mom turned 50 this year, and my family threw a luau-themed party. The weather did not cooperate but we did not let a little (or a LOT) of rain slow us down. Lindy was in charge of pretty much everything and did a great job!

Reid and cousin Maggie. He always has such a great time with her, but it sometimes takes him a while to warm up to her since we don't see them very often. I don't think he'll forget her now, though, since he has dubbed her his "sister."

Love the lantern lights!

Reid discovered (virgin) daiquiris. I think it was the first time he was truly on a visible sugar rush. At last count, he had four of those daiquiris and he loved them!

Sweet Layla, my friend Kelly's little girl. Quite possibly the best baby I have ever met. I seriously forgot she was there for several minutes at a time, she was so quiet and happy. I told Kelly that I hoped she knew most babies were not like that and to enjoy it - Reid never let anyone forget he was there, and still doesn't!

I imported some of my friends to the party. Sunshine, Layla, Kelly and me - so glad you girls made the drive!
